How to Measure Your Desk for a Monitor Riser

Field notes / Measuring

A riser adds a layer to your workspace. Before you choose one, check the surface below it, the equipment above it, and the room you need to work around it.

1. Record the clear desktop area

Measure the usable width and depth of your desk in inches. Ignore the space occupied by a lamp, a wall-mounted screen, or other objects that will stay. Note wall edges, window sills, and any curved corners.

2. Measure the monitor base

Measure the widest and deepest points of the monitor base, not just the screen. A broad V-shaped base needs more depth than a compact rectangular one. The base should sit fully on the usable riser platform. Product exterior width does not necessarily equal usable top surface.

3. Map the footprint with paper

Mark the product’s stated width and depth on paper or removable tape on your desk. For the aluminum monitor riser, the listed dimensions are about 19.7 × 8.7 × 2.4 inches (50 × 22 × 6 cm). The 31.5-inch desk converter has a listed top surface of 31.5 × 15.7 inches; its keyboard tray and lifting structure require additional room. Check the product page and dimensional images for those differences.

4. Leave room to type and move

Place your keyboard, mouse, notebook, and the objects you reach for most around the marked area. Check whether drawers can open and whether cables can reach without tension. If you want to tuck a keyboard under a riser, compare its width and height with the actual internal clearance. Do not treat the riser’s exterior height as its internal clearance.

5. Check the space above and behind

Allow for the monitor’s total height and for access to ports. For an adjustable converter, check the room needed at every height and keep objects clear of the lifting mechanism. Only rely on stated load and adjustment information for the particular product.

6. Compare before you order

Keep a short list: monitor base, desktop footprint, equipment weight, cable reach, and required clearance. If a needed measurement is not listed, ask us before purchasing. Our customer care team can help you understand the information available without guessing at fit.
